The City of Phoenix’s Public Works department was required by law to have access to archived information on the City’s automotive fleet. The department had been using a fleet management software that had been replaced by a packaged application. The archived information was not exported to the replacement system and still resided on a HP e3000 server that would soon no longer be supported by Hewlett-Packard. The Public Works department needed to transfer the archived data to a format that was accessible using current technology.

When Hewlett-Packard announced the end-of-life for the HP e3000, ING Australia needed to mitigate the risk to business continuity by migrating to a new technology platform. The company had started down the path of a rewrite but that proved to be too time-consuming and labor-intensive. Virginia International Terminals is of the most sophisticated marine terminal operating companies in the world. It manages all of the state owned port terminal facilities for the state of Virginia. A significant amount of VIT’s IT investment runs on HP e3000 business servers. When engaged to analyze the company’s business environment and propose an effective system migration strategy, Speedware professionals performed a complete analysis of VIT’s business landscape, organizational issues, technology infrastructure, applications and databases. A comprehensive plan was developed and the client then proceeded with a feasibility study. The study focused on selecting a subset of application and database files and migrating these to the target platform. Exceptional issues were isolated and addressed. The experience was then used to develop and deliver customized training that educated VIT staff on how to handle the complete migration project. The plan was revised accordingly. VIT is continuing to engage Speedware consulting services from Speedware on an ongoing basis.

In response to HP’s end-of-support announcement for the HP e3000 platform, TRSL decided to migrate its mission-critical software applications and databases, used by over 250 users, to HP-UX. The organization also migrated all of its Image and KSAM databases to Oracle.

TJ Systems develops and supports the Financial and Management Accounting (FMA) application. Over the product’s 15-year history, customers have come to appreciate its features, functionalities and user-friendliness. FMA is a COBOL-based application originally designed for use on the popular HP e3000 platform. However by 1995, it had become clear that HP e3000 was a declining market for new applications. TJ Systems was eager to respond to market demands to support the solution on other platforms, such as the HP-UX.

Expeditors had relied on the HP e3000 business server for over 15 years. The company was eager to convert three of its mission-critical legacy applications to UNIX before 2006, when HP will be terminating support for the server. It was crucial, however that Expeditors identify a solution that would enable it to easily migrate without interrupting its business, losing any data, or impacting IT priorities. It also wanted to migrate these applications to UNIX in order to enjoy the benefits of an open systems environment. In addition, Expeditors needed to ensure that the converted applications would continue to interface with systems and third-party software.

Speedware performed a comprehensive platform migration analysis through a number of interview sessions with key employees at Coughlin, a group insurance management company, to determine future needs. Speedware’s consultants interviewed over a dozen individuals from all functional departments at the company. Based on this analysis, needs were documented, summarized, and presented to the client. Coughlin continues to work with Speedware, who is helping them get closer to accomplishing their main goal – to resolve the HP e3000 platform transition challenge.
