Quick Start in Motion

Founded in 1908 and in its third generation of private ownership, the Flintco Companies is the largest American Indian owned construction company and is one of the largest commercial contractors in the nation.

Flint Industries’ (Flint) primary goal during this Quick Start Migration was the acquisition of skills required for the platform migration effort. Consequently, the company requested that the emphasis be placed on training in the migration methodology rather than on providing them with a fully functional migrated application since they would be ultimately responsible for a substantial amount of the work involved in the migration project.

As such, Flint industries needed to obtain a strong understanding of the migration process involved in porting their HP e3000 application files, Image databases and JCL code, to a HP9000 / HP-UX / Eloquence and Omnidex platform.

Given the request from Flint for intense involvement of their resources during the training phase, two components were essential for the success of Flint’s Quick Start Migration. First, full participation of Flint Industries’ staff was recommended in the onsite demonstration and execution of the application and database migration effort to its new UNIX platform, as well as in the JCL translation. Secondly, Flint’s resources were provided with the necessary scripts, tools, and training required for them to undertake a migration project.

Additionally, Speedware provided customized training that focused on how to achieve the same MPE-specific code functionality in their new HPUX environment. Thus, Flint became knowledgeable of migration procedures that were unique to their HP e3000 environment. Training in Eloquence and Omnidex was also instrumental in the knowledge transfer.

As a result of Speedware’s Quick Start Migration expertise and Flint’s close involvement in the process, migration goals were accomplished on schedule. The guidance and training provided by Speedware allowed Flint to plan their migration path forward and budget accordingly.
