Migrate Speedware application and database to another platform, such as HP-UX, Windows, AIX or Solaris.
Advantages:
- Hewlett-Packard offers a number of hardware incentive programs.
- Speedware/4GL code is 100% cross-platform portable - so the migration will be quick and efficient.
- Familiar Speedware applications on the new server save you the cost of re-training developers and users.
- Speedware products can be enhanced with a Windows or Web graphical user interface.
- Speedware tools convert your database and data in a fraction of the time it would take to perform a manual conversion.
Considerations:
- Replacement server: It will be necessary to acquire a replacement server for your HP e3000. Whether your business requires an HP 9000, IBM RS/6000 or Windows HP NetServer, Speedware can help you select the best server for your environment, as well as provide you with the best prices through our hardware vendor partnerships.
- Application migration: In most cases, Speedware applications may be migrated to your new server with very little difficulty. Speedware has the tools and expertise to help you through the migration process and minimize the impact on your production environment. Inquire about our free application migration assessment.
- Enhanced user interface: As long as you're migrating to a new platform, why not enhance your application's graphical user interface at the same time? Speedware can help turn screens and reports from character-based to GUI with a range of development tools.
Continue to use your HP e3000 for as long as you like, and take advantage of third-party support for the HP e3000 MPE/iX OS and hardware. This is obviously the easiest solution; however it presents a number of limitations.
Advantages:
- It's business as usual.
- No need to purchase new hardware or plan application and database migration projects.
Considerations:
- Within a couple of years, you'll need to find a new HP e3000 vendor for support and maintenance. Although Speedware would be pleased to help identify suitable vendors, it should be noted that product offerings and expertise will become more and more limited.
Replace your Speedware applications with a packaged software solution. It may be tempting to make a clean sweep, but the reality is that many companies have found that significant loss in functionality occurred upon replacing their customized applications with off-the-shelf ERP packages, for example. It is important to consider the pros and cons in this approach.
Advantages:
- Packaged solutions are generally Windows-friendly.
- ERP solutions offer out-of-the-box features for basic tasks.
Considerations:
- Packaged solutions are expensive, and usually require time-consuming professional customization services.
- Inter-operability issues with other systems hinder roll-out and increase down-time.
- Developers must be retrained or replaced, and end-users must adapt to the new system.
- Finding a package that fits your business can be difficult.
- Finding the right package in a sea of competitors and establishing a trusting relationship with the new vendor is a difficult, long-term task with no guarantees.
- New support and upgrade options may cost you more than your current fees.
